We planted a lot of Darwin Hybrid tulips two years ago, in the hopes they would bloom again after the first season. This will be the spring when we sort out how that plan worked, and so far the results are mixed.
Our two main tulip predators are voles and rot. We protect them from the voles by laying down chicken wire underneath them, and by encouraging foxes above them. The foxes (see previous post) have been doing their job, and the chicken wire does seem to help. There’s not a lot to be done about the rot, although keeping them in extremely well-drained soil (mostly sand) does seem to have made a difference with these ones.
I wonder how big the blooms will be in year two?
